Dahl Sverige AB

Business Resiliency, Virtualization for Server and Storage

Client background
Dahl Sweden AB is Sweden's leading wholesaler for plumbing, Mark & VA, Industrial, Refrigeration and Building Services. Dahl also provide tools and other supplies.

Business need
Dahl uses IBM Power and IBM SVC as a platform for warehouse management software to support the business decisions in a timely manner. At the onset of the engagement, the company needed to refresh the servers and storage devices supporting its warehouse management and control software with newer, more powerful technology. The solution to support the technical requirements of its software, Dahl uses Power servers running AIX and SVC stretch cluster to support a highly available platform.

Solution implementation
By joining forces with IBM Premier Business Partner Shibuya Crossing AB to refresh its infrastructure with a blend of IBM Power Systems and IBM System Storage hardware complemented by IBM PowerVM Standard Edition virtualization technology" in a IBM Power 740 AIX server platform. Dahl uses IBM Power and IBM SVC as a platform for warehouse management software to support the business deci sions in a timely manner. Dahl had ageing IBM power and storwize solution that were in need of being refreshed. The software defined SVC part of the solution is New and added as an extra layer of redundancy for the solution.

The IBM Power machines were used as the platform for the Oracle databases and the warehouse solution with applications like Astro and Miniload running on the machines, with the new solution we increased the availability of the Oracle solution due to SVC Stretch Cluster and IBM Power High availability.

Technical details
The solution to support the technical requirements of its software, Dahl uses Power servers running AIX and SVC stretch cluster to support a highly available platform. The solution is based on software defined solutions around infrastructure. We are using PowerVM, SVC and virtualizedstorage. The solution is highly available and split between two datacenters. The load is around logistics and running Oracle as core software. The solution is running IBM Power 740 Express server on IBM AIX operating system in a High Availability configuration.

The power solution is storing all its data on two redundant IBM Storwize v7000 systems and they are connected as a stretch solution with the use of SVC nodes in front of the storwize machines. With the SVC stretch solution the data is automatically redundantly protected between the two Storwize v7000 Unified Gen2 systems and provides automatic seamless failover in case of failure in the disk subsystem. IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller defined storage solution that sits in front of the IBM Storwize machines in a stretch cluster configuration to be able to add redundancy and seamless failover in the backend storage solution.

Summary of benefit with the solution
Dahl used ageing IBM Power and IBM SVC as a platform for warehouse management software to support the business decisions in a timely manner. The IBM Power machines were used as the platform for the Oracle databases and the warehouse solution with applications like Astro and Miniload running on the machines. The company needed to refresh the servers and storage devices supporting its warehouse management and control software with newer, more powerful technology. Shibuya has provided the solution from business case to design and implementation.

Benefits of the solution
By joining forces with IBM Premier Business Partner Shibuya Crossing AB to refresh its infrastructure with a blend of IBM Power Systems and IBM System Storage hardware complemented by IBM PowerVM Standard Edition virtualization technology, Dahl gained performance and availability of its software stack to support the logistics applications. The processor gave better response times and better licensing costs. The virtualized infrastructure streamlined administration task sigificantly.
